My Radio Controlled Helicopters

continued

The Original Kalt Huey Cobra
Dieter Schluter is credited with designing and building the first flyable R/C helicopter. He licensed the design to the Japanese and the result is the first Japanese-made R/C heli, the Kalt Huey Cobra 450. It was slightly smaller than Schluter's first heli, using an Enya .45 engine. Like Schluter's Heli, it had a fixed-pitch rotor head for simplicity. Companies like Kavan and Graupner soon released collective pitch helis and both Schluter and Kalt followed suit. You can say that this is a piece of R/C heli history.

Kalt Huey Cobra 450 Mechanics
The pioneering designs for R/C helis pretty much emulated full-size helis, like the transmission box shown here. The body was part of the structure, so there were no dedicated structural frames like helis of today. Unlike the Bell rotor head where the flybar had no aerodynamic paddles, R/C helis adopted the Hiller design which sacrificed drag for flying stability. Stanley Hiller's son Steve was a member of the Rotor Kings and flew with us once in a while. (Check out the very cool Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, CA.)
